  Sri Krishna Jayanti
I have never had so much confusion about when Krishna Jayanti or Krishna Ashtami or Janmashtami needs to be celebrated. In most of the temples in India and United States Janmashtami was celebrated this year on August 15th. Even I was about to start the Krishna Abhishekham on that day, when I was stopped by one of the email replies I read from Sri Swamiji. Many people had doubts as to when to celebrate Janmashtami and they had asked HH the exact date. To our relief HH explained clearly why Janmashtami needs to be celebrated only on Spetember 15th. By the way, Ashtami in US according to Livermore Temple calendar happened yesterday, so technically in the US yesterday was the right time to celebrate the festival. I performed the puja at night yesterday, so it was 15th morning in India and 14th evening in the US. I wonder sometimes why there is so much disparity in information from temple to temple and why Janmashtami was celebrated on August 15th even though the learned people knew that the month was polluted! Also, this is not a reasoning for just Iyengars - I believe it applies to one and all - take it or leave it! Its not that Krishna was born one month later for Iyengars and a month earlier for all others - pun intended! Wishing you all a wonderful Krishna Jayanti and may Lord Krishna bless you all with all prosperity and health. Here is the reply from HH:

KRISHNASHTAMI OR "SRI JAYANTHI " AS SRI VAISHNAVITES CALL IT, SHOULD BE CELEBRATED, ON A DAY WHEN THE SUN STAYS IN SIMHA RASI AND WHEN ROHINI STAR OR ASHTAMI THITTHI STAY WITHOUT ANY POLLUTION.

POLLUTION MEANS: BY SUNRISE, IF THAT PARTICULAR STAR OR THITTHI ENJOINS WITH THE PREVIOUS ONE. THEY ALSO CALL IT AS "VIDDHA".

TO CELEBRATE THE FUNCTION, OUT OF BOTH THITHHI AND STAR, WHICHEVER REMAINS LONG WILL ONLY BE CONSIDERED TO BE THE ONE FOR FUNCTION. IF THAT REMAINS UNTIL THE MORNING THAT IS ENOUGH, THAT NEED BE THERE DURING MID NIGHT. HENCE THAT DAY CAN BE TAKEN "PURE" FOR PERFORMING THE FUNCTION. IT IS BECAUSE THE KRISHNA'S JANM SLOKA SAYS

SIMHA RA:SOW ASITHE: PAKSHE: RO:HINYA:M ASHTAMI: THITTHOW |
CHARAMA:RTTHA PRADA:THA:RAM KRUSHNAM VANDE: JAGAD GURUM ||

NOW ON 15TH OR 16TH OF AUGUST, THE SUN'S ENTRANCE INTO SIMHA RASI HAS NOT OCCURED AT ALL. HE IS STILL IN THE KARKATAKA RASI. HE WILL BE ENTERING INTO SIMHA RA:SI ON 17TH IN THE EVENING AT 6.48 pm. SO PERFORMING HIS FUNCTION IN AUGUST, IS NOT PROPER.

DURING SEPTEMBER, ON 15TH SUN IS IN SIMHA RASI, ALTHOUGH "PURE" ROHINI WAS ON THE PREVIOUS DAY, BUT ASHTAMI GOT POLLUTED ON 14TH. HENCE THAT DAY IS ALSO NOT GOOD - NOW WHICHEVER REMAINS TILL THE END CAN BE TAKEN, SO, ASHTAMI STAYS ON THE 15H ALSO AND THAT TOO WITHOUT ANY POLLUTION, THUS "15TH SEPTEMBER" WILL BE OUR "SRI JAYANTHI' DAY.

WE ARE SURE WE DID NOT CONFUSE YOU MUCH.

The Lord, Srimannarayana is the supreme godhead for our Hindu Sanatana Dharma. His abode is 'Vaikuntam', also known as 'Paramapadam'. The Lord takes birth on this earth to upkeep Dharma and these incarnations of God is what we, 'Mandhamatis' seek refuge in. My acharya, HH Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji, very rightly preaches 'Serve all beings as Service to God', 'Respect All and Worship your own'. Here, I share my experiences in my spiritual walk of life - Karthik Nagaraj
